Sheesh, politics are soooo divisive. I just wonder how many of those who complain about how the system works will bother to go out and vote Tuesday. IMHO, if you won't pick who you want in office, you have no cause to complain about how the system works. Just the other night, saw a news story in which a guy used a stun gun on his girlfriend-then threatened to stab her all because she planned to vote for Kerry!!!! Okay, I plan to vote for Kerry, too. Bush had one shining moment, one. In the days following 9/11. I don't happen to believe things have gotten better under his watch. Even if he comes back, turnout is going to be so high this time around that W might not want to count on another term. However, under term limits, a sitting Prez can only serve two terms.
In an unrelated (but could be) story, a man hijacked newspaper kiosks kit and kaboodle. That's right, just came in and snatched those right out of the ground. Took the cement casing, too. Excuse was that he needed the money. Can we say economic brain freeze?

Less than a week to go (Whew!) and we will either have a new President or another four years with the same old, same old. Already the lawyers are standing by just in case. Of course, all this could be avoided if people started using their brain cells a little more often. Think about it, folks: Fla 2000 had one large glaring error-confused voters who did not bother to ask for help from poll workers and just picked willy nilly.
This time around, same Fla county cannot seem to keep track of their absentee ballots. So there is a distinct possibility of people voting twice.
On the plus side, some other stories seem to overrided the political debacle. Boston Red Sox finally won a World Series http://usatoday.com/sports. Yea! The curse of the Bambino seems to be finally broken. Now, if they could just rub off on the Cubs...
Arafat may be deceased by this weekend.
And, for the odder than odd. Washingston State had a school cancel its Halloween celebrations because they did not want to offend witches. Just how far away was that blue moon?

Yahoo! News - Red Faces at Orange as Customer Gets Blue Photos
Yahoo! News - Red Faces at Orange as Customer Gets Blue Photos
This caught my attention simply because of the title. In the days remaining before the elections of both the President or local officials, all the media can focus on is how the states are going to cast their votes. Which does not make much sense since nobody will know for sure until the votes are cast. Even then, there are going to be some states which are not going to get counted until after midnight. What is even more bizarre is that both candidates are focusing so much on the outcome that they are ignoring the jobs which they are supposed to be doing to begin with. Not to mention their gazillion trips to "swing" states. Do they not realize that every state is going to be casting ballots on Nov. 2nd?

After the last debate (thank heavens), pundits and campaigners alike started to talk. What did they discuss? Not the war in Iraq, or the homefront fiasco. But Mary Cheney. For this reason- VP Cheney has a daughter who is gay. Talk about one of the worst kept secrets in Washington. Not only has she never denied it, neither has anybody else. It has been mentioned, albeit briefly, in speeches, and by the media. And nobody has ever stepped forward and denied anything. So why are news segments being devoted to this? Because John Kerry said Mary Cheney would probably say she did not choose to be gay. John Edwards mentioned it in his own debate, saying her parents should be well respected for the way in which they raised her. Nothing cruel, or derogatory. Still, Lynne Cheney said "What a cheap and tawdry political trick". Excuse me? The Democratic candidates merely repeated what has been said all along. Besides, in case anybody has forgotten, Mary made the decision to join her father's campaign. Seems to me her sexual preference is going to come up at some point, like Kerry's divorce or Edward's son Wade, who died in a car accident.

Bill O'Reilly is being sued for sexual harrassment. In and of itself, this is not odd. What I find curious is the timeline of his harasser's employment history. For four years, an associate producer worked at Fox News Channel with The O'Reilly factor. Supposedly, that is when the harassment started. She left to take a producer's job at CNN for a time. Then, perplexingly, went back to Fox working for the same program where she allegedly was the "victim" of tacky frat boy humor. So, let me get this straight. She is sexually harassed during time number one at Fox, yet never took any kind of action. (The proof of evidence tape has yet to be produced) She then goes on to the networks chief rival network with a bigger title and a higher salary, then turns around and goes back to the place she wasn't happy with to begin with. Wait a minute. If I got a new job with better working conditions, and more income, I think I would really hesitate to go back to a former employer. What also occurs to me is that this is an election year. And who is trying to keep his job? The Republican President who would find his political leanings mostly aligned with the content at Fox. Hmmm....

2nd debate between the man who is President and the man who wants to be. This one was a lot more fiesty. However, President Bush lost in one big respect. When the moderator sets the rules, practically yelling in his face just so you can get one more word in qualifies as tacky. At least they stuck to their constant message. Bush still doesn't get it. We have messes going on all over the place. Continuing in the same patterns won't solve the problems, but rather, lets them continue. Kerry may be more comfortable behind the podium, but he did just fine. Bush had to be in recovery mode much too long for my taste. And, btw, "um" is not the word you want to keep repeating when one is making that all too public speech.

Book Review of Islands by Anne Rivers Siddons

i>Islands by Anne Rivers Siddons abounds with the rich culture of Charleston, South Carolina. From the first page, one feels drawn into the story of its narrator, Anny Butler. After meeting Lewis Aiken, Anny is quickly brought into the world of the Scrubs, a close knit group whose fondest memories are created at a beach house in Sullivan's Island. Readers get to see the progression of a tight bond get stronger over time. One also sees the effect of that time on the group of enduring characters. However, there is an undercurrent of uneasiness beneath this charming scene. From tragedy to more foreboding concerns, readers will want to read cover to cover just to see what happens next.
Siddons is to be commended for her strong portrayal of a lesser known southern town. Anyone who is fortunate enough to pick up this book will want to make plans to pack up the bags and fly down for a visit. This is a good example about writing based on one's own experience.
However, it is also a disturbing tale of just what can lie between the surface. One of the unlikeable characters actually tips off readers to the manipulation which lies ahead. Although Anny suspects trouble, she keeps it to herself. One can almost sense the final, heartstopping showdown between the past and the all too grim present. ASIN 0066211115

last night, caught the ABC premieres of Boston Legal and Desperate Housewifes. The latter was fabulous! If you enjoyed Twin Peaks, this show is going to keep your attention. Throw in some Ally McBeal quirkiness (no surprise that BL, which follows, was written by David E. Kelley, who wrote came up with Calista Flockhart's tour de force). So much for suburbia being a quiet place without much happening. Can't wait to see what happens next.

The first political debate between Pres. Bush and Sen. John Kerry has come and gone. Have seen some of the analysis, and think the commentators got it right. Say what you will about Kerry's senatorial record, but Pres. Bush looked far too often as though he was unsure how to proceed when it came time for him to answer. Fact is, America has not gotten better after four years. Yes, we may have prevented another 9/11. So far. There is no guarantee that another attack will not come along down the road. We bear part of the responsibility for what happened that day simply because security was assumed as a given issue. On my street, three of my neighbors have signs in their yards with the familiar Bush/Cheney logos. A few blocks away, one lady has a Kerry/Edwards sign. I have to admire her guts. In a part of the US where most citizens are die hard Republicans, she is willing to make a stand of her own, without feeling guilty about "What will the neighbors think?". Yes, Pres. Bush may be a good father and great husband to his family. However, come November, Kerry will have my vote. Perhaps the problems will still be around, but there will be a fresh face in office and a new plan for future action.

It seems as though politics are much in the news lately. Media cannot help itself, there is an election going on this year. Congress is also holding an election this year, yet that has gotten pushed aside in "one of the most critical elections" in history. Please. What happened to all the other elections to put people in office before now? Besides, term limits restrict how long a President can serve in office. No such limits exist for Congress. However, voters have their own form of limits. It's called put somebody else in office. This week, I actually saw another story take precedence over any politician. Mt. St. Helens erupted again. Now then, I am fully aware that it is one of the oldest volcanoes in history. And people were waiting for it to become alive once more. But ladies and gentlemen, it is a volcano. By the laws of nature, it erupts. That steam has to go somewhere. Othersie that would be one nasty mess.
